I Am Giant to play @ The Basement in New Plymouth

Before I Am Giant head off to Australia and America, the band decided to sneak in a couple of extra New Zealand shows.

‘We were getting fans hitting us up on Facebook wanting us to play in their town, and since we had a weekend free before going overseas, we thought it would be a great thing to do !’ says drummer Shelton Woolright.

The gigs wraps up a few whirlwind months which have seen the band shoot a video featuring world surf champion Kelly Slater, recorded a live to air for XFM in the UK, complete a handful of London gigs, performed in Vietnam for Tiger Translate, fly to France to play at the opening of the new Quiksliver headquarters and tour New Zealand on the massively successful State of Rock tour.

I Am Giant’s first ever release, the ‘Neon Sunrise/City Limits EP’, recently debuted in the NZ singles chart at No 18 and is still in the Top 30. The EP will also be released later this year in Australia and Asia via Sony Records.

Metallica to play Christchurch – update

Metallica have added yet another concert to their New Zealand itinerary.

The band will now play at the CBS Canterbury Arena on September 21 and 22, weeks before their sold-out shows at Auckland’s Vector Arena.

September 21 and 22: Christchurch, CBS Canterbury Arena
October 13 and 14: Auckland, Vector Arena

Heavy metal heavyweights Metallica will play a show in Christchurch, following an online campaign from South Island fans which attracted over 11,000 supporters.

The band will play at the CBS Canterbury Arena on September 22, weeks before their sold-out shows at Auckland’s Vector Arena.

In a statement issued in response to a Facebook campaign, the band said “sometimes, you do get what you want! You asked (okay, demanded!) and we heard ya.”

Metallica’s last New Zealand appearance was in 2004 on the Auckland leg of the Big Day Out tour. The band has not headlined its own New Zealand tour since 1998, when it played shows in Auckland and Wellington in support of the 1997 album, ReLoad.

Because of limitations presented by the Christchurch arena, the band’s full concert setup will not be used on September 22. The 360 degree stage setup has been used on Metallica’s World Magnetic tour since 2008 and will be seen at both Auckland shows.

“It’s gonna be us and YOU old-school ‘club style’ in an arena making a whole lot of noise together, and that’s what counts.”

A presale for fanclub members will open on Friday, July 9, while a public presale will go live at midday on Tuesday, July 13. They will sell fast!

Bee Gee (just the one) Tour

One of the infamously falsetto-voiced trio the Bee Gees, Robin Gibb, has announced a three date New Zealand tour.

As part of his Bee Gees Greatest Hits tour, Gibb will perform with the Pointer Sisters, comprising sisters Anita and Ruth with Ruth’s granddaughter, Sadako, at the TSB Bank Arena, Wellington and the CBS Canterbury Arena between November 10-12.

Gibb, who has maintained a successful solo career, last performed in New Zealand in 1999 when he played to more than 60,000 people in Auckland’s Western Springs, one of the largest concert attendances in New Zealand history.

“It’s been a long time, but I’m really, really pleased to be coming back one more time to play for the New Zealand fans,” Gibb says.

The Bee Gees are the only group to have recorded number one songs in four different decades and there are more than 6500 cover version of the songs.

Gibb will perform the group’s biggest songs including Massachusetts, How Deep is Your Love, Stayin’ Alive, Night Fever, You Win Again, Nights on Broadway, Jive Talking, I Started A Joke, Words, To Love Somebody, New York Mining Disaster and many more.

The Gibb brothers, Barry, and twins Robin and Maurice, were born in Britain to British parents but moved to Australia in the mid ’50s where their music career began, gaining their first chart success there with Spicks and Specks. Inducted into the Rock’n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, it is estimated The Bee Gees have sold more than 200 million records. Maurice died in 2003. In 2009 Barry and Robin announced plans to record and perform together as the Bee Gees.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, July 5 through ticketek.co.nz.

Paramore announce NZ show

Paramore are returning to New Zealand, just seven months after performing two sold out shows here.

The American rock act, fronted by red haired front woman Hayley Williams, will perform in Wellington on October 7, and in Auckland on October 8.

The band last performed here in March, and according to a tweet by Williams, the band loved their time here.

“Why did it take us 5 years to get here? Can’t wait to come back to New Zealand. Please, dear God, let it be soon. Never had so much fun in 3 days in my whole life. NZ, we’ll miss you!” she said after the show.

Tickets for both shows go on sale on July 9.

Metallica NZ shows – sold out

Tickets to Metallica’s two Auckland shows sold out in just 20 minutes this morning, leaving some angry fans empty-handed.

The tickets went on sale at 9am and promoters for the two shows, on October 13 and 14 at Vector Arena, said they were sold out by 9.20am. Stuff.co.nz was swamped with feedback by irate fans who tried to buy them over the internet, but couldn’t get through.

“I was on the website from 8.50am and nothing. Both pre-sales failed and sure enough no 25th birthday for me. It was going to be the best start to my honeymoon too,” said a poster called Chris. “Once again, the Ticketmaster website is unstable and not up to modern day needs,” said another poster called Mark. Fans who camped out overnight at Real Groovy in Auckland told Stuff.co.nz they spent the night chatting to other fans and sleeping.

“I’ve been sleeping, talking to strangers, and sleeping again,” said a Metallica fan of 20 years.

“I was going to go down to Britomart, but I came down here and saw these guys and thought, ‘I’ll just get in here with these guys’. I’m third in line. It’s alright,” said another.

“It’s never too long to wait (for tickets),” said a third fan. “As long as we get one.”

Queues were “right around the corner” at Real Groovy’s Queen Street store in Auckland this morning, a staff member said. They were still selling tickets at 9.30am.

A handful of fans also camped out overnight at Real Groovy in Wellington.

One fan who tried to score tickets over the internet said: “General sale tickets were gone so fast, by 9.02am when I got through they were gone. Here’s hoping for a third show.”

Promoters said the second show for October 14, announced on Monday, was to be the last, and no extra shows in New Zealand were planned. A small number of tickets could be released at a later date, promoters said. Meanwhile, a special offer from Air New Zealand will mean Christchurch Metallica fans will be able to travel to Auckland to see the band for $1. Bruce Parton, from Air New Zealand’s discount ticketing site Grabaseat, announced the special offer yesterday. “We’ll give 120 seats [from Christchuch to Auckland] at a dollar,” he said. “All you have to do is have a Metallica ticket.”

Parton said the themed flight would have a “party atmosphere” with “black T-shirts and long hair”.

The Grabaseat sale is on now. http://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/vgrabview/en_NZ/

Twice the Metallica – 2nd show for Auckland

A second Metallica concert was announced today and both events take place at Auckland’s Vector Arena, on October 13 and 14.

A media release from de Launay Enterprises exclaims: “Due to an overwhelming demand during the current pre-sale period, second shows have been added to Metallica’s long awaited World Magnetic Tour of New Zealand and Australia!”

All Kiwi Metallica fans will have to travel to Auckland if they want to see the band play in New Zealand this year.

The concerts are promised to last more than two hours each and will feature material drawn from throughout Metallica’s career, on a custom built stage and with their full world tour production.

Tickets go on general sale Thursday May 13 with pre-sales said to be running now.
