New Plymouth’s Singers Songwriters group will celebrate its sixth birthday tonight night.
The group meets on the last Friday of each month at the New Plymouth Little Theatre.
Founder Anand Rose said he got the idea from a similar event he used to attend in Dublin and the group’s aim was to encourage and nurture local musicians.
“It’s to facilitate the growth of the Taranaki music scene,” Mr Rose said. “Allowing musicians to improve, no matter what standard they are at.”
Mr Rose said artists were limited to one song a night and there were up to 20 performances.
“There’s a team of up to 10 people who make it possible.”
He was looking forward to many more years with the group.
Newcomer David Calder said he was thrilled to be performing at the birthday bash. “It is a real privilege to be among these enthusiasts for acoustic and folk music in Taranaki,” he said.
Doors open at 7pm tonight and the music will start about 8pm
