It’s likely that this year’s Grammy Awards will be best remembered for the triumph of underdogs in key categories. Indie artists Arcade Fire took home the Album of the Year prize for The Suburbs, beating out best-selling discs by Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and Eminem, while jazz vocalist Esperanza Spalding unexpectedly beat out Justin Bieber, Mumford & Sons, Drake and Florence and the Machine for Best New Artist.
The ceremony was packed with memorable performances this year. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.
Top nominee Eminem won Rap Album for Recovery and Rap Solo Performance for “Not Afraid,” though he was shut out in every other category. Jay-Z won two awards — Rap Song for “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys, and Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “On to the Next One” with Swizz Beatz.
In the rock categories, Paul McCartney won Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the live recording of “Helter Skelter” on his Good Evening New York City album, while Neil Young’s “Angry World” won for Rock Song and Muse’s The Resistance won for Rock Album. The Black Keys took home two Grammys – Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for their song “Tighten Up” and Alternative Music Album for Brothers.
It should come as no surprise that Lady Gaga’s performance of her new single “Born This Way” was the evening’s most visually stunning and bizarre spectacle:
Bob Dylan joined Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers for a medley of acoustic numbers including his classic “Maggie’s Farm”:
Mick Jagger made his first-ever live appearance at the Grammy Awards with tribute to the late Solomon Burke backed up by Raphael Saadiq and his band:
Whereas most everyone else on the Grammy stage went big and bold, Lady Antebellum opted for a stripped-down, understated medley of Teddy Pendergrass’ “If Don’t Know Me By Now” and their hits “American Honey” and “Need You Now”:
Cee Lo Green put on what could be the night’s silliest and most colorful performance with a rendition of his song “Fuck You” — err, “Forget You,” sorry — decked out in a peacock suit and backed up by Gwyneth Paltrow and a stage full of puppets from the Jim Henson Company:
Arcade Fire performed two songs at the ceremony — a blistering version of “Month of May” with a bunch of guys riding around on bikes, and “Ready to Start” after they won for Album of the Year:

A Lady Gaga* remix by Auckland musician Patty Boy (the fourth most subscribed New Zealand musician on youtube) has been featured in a New York Times blog.
The New York Times called the remix “a pulsating battle cry of selfhood that plays in gay nightclubs, at circuit parties and on fan-made videos across the Web.”
*The article also quoted Elton John as saying the Lady Gaga song Born This Way – which Cavill based his remix on – would “completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive as the gay anthem”.

Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber are both approaching a major milestone of the new music industry: one billion all-time YouTube views.
Lady Gaga should pass one billion views around October 20 if she continues on her current pace, according to David Birch, communications director at TubeMogul. During September, she averaged almost 1.8 million views per day.
Birch says Bieber will surpass the 1 billion views milestone around November 1 if he keeps up his current pace. During September, Bieber’s videos were viewed about 3.7 million times per day.
Even though Lady Gaga will be the first to the one billion mark, TubeMogul data shows that lately Bieber has been the hotter of the two and has been YouTube’s most-viewed music artist. From July 1 to September 28, according to TubeMogul data supplied to Billboard, Bieber averaged 3.98 million daily views to Lady Gaga’s 2.04 million views per day.
Bieber has been hot since winter. Since February 28, Bieber has averaged 3.83 million daily views while Lady Gaga has averaged 2.53 million.

Lady Gaga is set to become the face of Twinings tea, who may create a new flavour in her honour.
The flamboyant singer’s love of the hot beverage is well-documented. She regularly requests the drink during interviews, and is often seen in public with her pet tea cup and saucer.
Gaga has apparently been approached by several tea companies who think she would be the perfect choice to front their campaigns. However, she is particularly enamoured with Twinings, who are said to have offered her a multi-million-pound deal.
Twinings are an English firm dating back 300 years, and are famed for offering many different flavours of the drink. It is this which appeals to Gaga, especially as there is talk of a new flavour being invented just for her.
“Her management have received a load of offers from major tea companies but Twinings are the front-runners. They want to launch a new tea with her face on it and discussions are taking place at the top level,” a source told British newspaper The Sun.
“Names like The Taste Of Gaga are being batted about. The idea is to have tasting sessions in which she would participate.
“The tasters are coming up with a tea with an oriental flavour. They want to market tea to a new, younger generation – particularly in America, and Gaga is making drinking tea cool again.”
Gaga performed at Sir Elton John’s White Tie And Tiara Ball in June, and he presented her with a vintage teapot to say thanks.
During an appearance on a British television show last year, Gaga refused to leave her cup backstage and answered questions while sipping the beverage.

Dancer Jaered Glavin, 21, choreographed a 6 1/2-minute Lady Gaga-inspired routine over 12 hours of rehearsals in the space of two weeks, for a workshop run by the ballet company.
He uploaded the video to YouTube a week ago and it has already been viewed more than 50,000 times, making it New Zealand’s top-rated YouTube clip this month. It has also been featured on Lady Gaga’s official fan page and received international attention.
Glavin said most of the groups at the workshop used classical music scores and more traditional dance steps. “I wanted to go a bit mad and just have a lot of fun with it.”
It was his first choreographing stint since he trained at the Royal Ballet School in London. Glavin, a big Lady Gaga fan, chose the track Bad Romance (Starsmith Remix) and selected six Gaga-ettes, fellow Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers Katie Hurst-Saxton, Katherine Grange, Clytie Campbell, Lucy Balfour, Antonia Hewitt and Maree White. The dancers, decked out in blonde wigs and skimpy outfits, fused Gaga’s distinctive pop style with traditional ballet moves.
