A busker who gave a scorching live performance to an audience of two in Lambton Quay was “awestruck” to find one of them was rocker George Thorogood – who was so impressed he gave the guitarist free tickets to his concert.
Joe Murphy, 19, of Tawa, was playing in his regular spot outside Whitcoulls on Tuesday when two men stopped to listen.
He strummed BB King’s The Thrill is Gone and Santana’s Black Magic Woman before one of the men approached him.
“He came up and said, ‘Hi, I’m George Thorogood,’ and I said, ‘Hi, I’m Joe, how’s it going?’.
“He said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ and I said, ‘No’, then he said, ‘We play that song Bad to the Bone.”‘
Blues rocker Thorogood complimented him on his musicianship and asked why he was playing in the street. The former New Zealand School of Music student replied that it was hard to make a living as a musician.
Thorogood then invited him to the Wellington concert he was playing with Joe Cocker that night, handed him an American dollar bill and strolled off, along with his minder.

“He was pretty chilled out. I didn’t know who he was, but I knew he was either rich or famous or both, because they have that kind of swagger about them,” Mr Murphy said.
“They were listening quite intently, which is cool – not many people stop by and actually take the time. I was stoked that anyone would do that, but it was pretty awesome that it was George Thorogood.”
Dad John Murphy, who was the lucky recipient of the second ticket, thought it hilarious his son did not recognise the 60-year-old rocker, who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
John Murphy said: “When I got home he said, ‘Dad, this guy supported Santana, he’s huge!”‘
George Thorogood and Joe Cocker are set to play the Bowl of Brooklands, here in New Plymouth on Friday the 28th of January. So if your a busker and want a free tickets I would suggest One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer or you can leave your hat on.

Usher’s New Zealand concert has been delayed by a week, potentially disrupting the plans of hundreds of fans who already have tickets for the Auckland-only concert.
The Frontier Touring Company said the American R’n’B super star’s concert, scheduled for March 29, had “for logistical reasons” been pushed back by a week until April 5.
This comes after Usher pulled out of the opening concert in Berlin, Germany on January 12, after falling ill with a sinus infection. The “Yeah!” hitmaker was scheduled to perform at the city’s O2 World venue, but scrapped the gig at the last minute after he was diagnosed with a paranasal sinus infection, according to local reports.
The company said tickets purchased for March 29 remain valid for the April 5 concert and do not need to be exchanged. However fans who had booked flights or accommodation for the March 29 concert could be left out of pocket with the date no longer valid. Frontier says any fans who are unable to attend the concert on the new date should contact Ticketmaster or the original ticketing outlet for a refund no later than February 28.

| Taylor Swift rumored to play at the bowl |
Taranaki is set to have several international A-list artists perform at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands over the next three years. The New Plymouth District Council has an agreement with promoter Andrew McManus, who brought Fleetwood Mac in December 2009, to have six events featuring A-list artists between now and the end of 2013.
While Ms Thurston would not be drawn on which artists could perform in New Plymouth, there are several options for summer 2011.
One potential artist is American country singer Taylor Swift who announced she would perform in New Zealand at the end of the year as part of her world wide tour.

Other possible performers are R.E.M, Coldplay and Radiohead, who are all set to release albums this year.
Mr McManus has signed on with the council following the success of the two Fleetwood Mac shows.
Each concert will be exclusive to Taranaki, with the solo artist or band playing no other North Island shows while in New Zealand.
Andrew McManus Presents promotes artists such as ZZ Top, Chris Isaak, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Dog, Korn and Guns N Roses.

SCRIBE AWARD The Crusader
Current bid: $1,339.00 Reserve met Closes: Fri 28 Jan, 8:45 pm Listing #: 348500502
“This is the original award presented to Scribe (Malo Luafutu) in reconognition of Triple platinum sales. for his album The Crusader. Presented 19th December 2003
This is the third of four awards he received for his Crusader Album, please see other auctions listed”
A Christchurch pawnbroker is selling five of Scribe’s music awards on auction site TradeMe after the rapper failed to redeem them.
Seller shane_deb, a licensed pawnbroker, listed the awards for $500 each today and says they plan to list more of Scribe’s music memorabilia later in the week.
The awards were presented to Scribe when his album The Crusader went platinum, then double platinum, triple platinum and four-times platinum after its release in 2003.
They feature a framed tiki or paua swirl, a photo of Scribe, silver CDs and a plaque.
The seller, who wanted to be known only as Shane, said he decided to list the items after he didn’t hear from Scribe for more than two months.
He said he has 11 of the 31-year-old rapper’s awards in total, from unredeemed loans, including his award for best male artist at the Pacific Music Awards in 2008.
“I’ve had them for two-and-a-half years. Legally, we only have to keep them for three months but I’ve kept them for him.
“He always promised he’d try and get them back but he hasn’t so now we’re just trying to get our money back.”
Shane said he owned a pawn shop in Christchurch, and had pawned things for a number of musicians.
“But none as high-profile as Scribe, or with things worth as much as this.”
He said he had tried to contact Scribe to say he was selling the awards, emailing his manager, but had received no reply.

| Elvis’s Special Agent Badge |
After hand delivering a letter to the northwest gate of the White House to president Richard Nixon on the morning of December 21, 1970 a meeting between the president and the King of Rock & Roll was arranged for 12:30 pm that day. The purpose of the letter and the meeting was Elvis’ desire to become an agent of some kind for the Drug Enforcement Agency to aid in the fight against illegal drugs (ironic, given that Elvis was heavily medicated at the time).
Elvis met with the president in the Oval Office of the White House, where he presented the president with a plated and engraved World War II-era Colt 45. In the meeting Elvis talked about his wish to help in stopping the promotion of anti-American spirit (specifically mentioning the Beatles) and drug use. Later that afternoon Presley received his badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs making him an honorary special agent.
